This work depicts yalka (bush onion) at Joyce’s country which is called Karrinyarra. Bush onion is used for food and bush medicine. Bush onions grow all year round and can be found near rockholes and water sources. Women harvest yalka by digging in the ground with a stick until it is soft, then pulling out the onion. Joyce’s aunt Topsy Dixon was an old knowledge woman who, as a Napaltjarri sister, was responsible for keeping that place at Karrinyarra. It was Topsy who gave Joyce permission to paint this Dreaming of the yalka at Karrinyarra.
